Going back to bed...

Do you ever have those days where you wish you could just go back to bed and it’s not even 8 a.m. yet? My day starts pretty early so I can usually tell by 7 or 8 a.m. whether or not it’s going to be a good or bad day. Honestly, I think I was tired. I didn’t get my typical 12+ hours sleep Saturday night. I met up with a gal to complete the 2nd half of a long run and didn’t have time for a nap after that. It was go, go, go not my typical, restful Sunday.
Last night, I attended convocation and heard some really top leaders talk about their experiences to these fresh, new impressionable students. Most important to my role on campus we have 32% women now, which is an increase from the stagnant 30% in previous years. This first day of class made campus hopping and I couldn’t help reflect back to my first year in college. After I did the math I realize, wow…I’m getting old! I started college in August of 1997, nine years ago! I couldn’t believe it when I calculated it. To be honest, I actually did the math twice because I didn’t think it could be right. Nine years! Looking back I’ve accomplished a lot and I reflected back as to whom was influential in those accomplishments, who it was that pushed me to succeed, and who it was that shaped me. Most of who came to mind are still those influential types in my life today. Will I be one of those practitioners one day? I hope so. I hope that my students will still call on me for advice, and stop by to tell me about a lead on a job and how excited they are to have been selected for a prestigious award. Who were those faculty or staff for you?
There is a lot going on at work lately. We are finalizing the programming calendar for this semester and we have 17 solid programs, and not to mention the countless other classroom presentations that I’ll be taking over. I’m sure I’ll blog about those individually as they came up, but I’m really excited about a Lunch and Learn Series I implemented with the Counseling Center. Each month we’ll gather at lunch time to learn about an aspect of assertiveness. It was a two-fold idea wanting to learn more about it myself and in a sense providing the knowledge to our students. I’m really excited about it and to see how the students respond.
Continuing down memory lane, I was invited to observe Sorority Recruitment, more specifically the recruitment skits. The Recruitment process is very formalize and much too in depth for the purpose of here, but I spent an hour with a woman who’s very proud of her affiliation and to be a Tech student. It was fun to tell her about how recruitment was in “my day” and to learn about a population on campus that I hope to work a lot with.
I was in a sorority in college and I attribute a lot of the great experience I got from being Greek. While I talked with a few of my “sisters” today I will always cherish the leadership, responsibilities and fun times I had during those 4 years.
So as my day went on it progressively got better and I attributed it to the life of the campus and the great people who I work with. It’s not often that you’ll get the opportunity to work under leadership that is as unyielding then at Tech. From the top down, there are some very influential leaders, and individuals who are really putting students first; it’s a nice change.
It’s bedtime and I really should have gone to bed and forgone writing this, but I think it was necessary to reflect back on today and capture the good and move on from the rough start. So with this unedited blog I’ll give you three things a friend emailed to brighten my day next time my outlook isn’t looking so good:

1 Eat a cookie,
2 go for a 5 minute walk outside
3 and give one person a compliment

Have a stellar Tuesday.

Eat a cookie...oh that's is awfully good.

This morning, I woke up at 8:30 am :D. That's the time I normally get out of my house. I guess my body crave those 12 hour sleep days too.

It is amazing how influential people around us help shape our lives. We have to remember to thank them for the positive influence they have on our lives.
I hope your lunch and learn can also be a great benefit to you and the students!
